FAQ

Frequently asked questions:

Why skylights?

To provide maximum natural lighting, a skylight is the answer. Unlike conventional wall windows, skylights are never totally in the shade. The amount of daylight reaching the interior of a structure through a skylight is up to five times greater than the amount of light from a wall window of equal size. Skylights also provide a more even distribution of natural light making any space more enjoyable.

Do skylights leak?

Skylights will leak if not made or installed properly. Every one of Mac Skylights is handmade from start to finish. All of our frames are meant to be mounted on an insulated curb which should be tied into your roofing system. To be completely tied in, the roofing membrane needs to come up the edge of the skylight curb and over the top edge. Flashing is installed around the base of the frame and then shingles installed to the base of the curb. Flashing is then installed around the top of the curb. You now have a base that is tied into your roof, the curb is now leakproof, and you are ready to install your Mac Skylight. When installing, the skylight needs to be sealed to the curb to create a tight air seal.

What are the insulation values of a skylight?

In general, plastic glazing materials have about one-fourth the thermal conductivity of glass. This translates to an insulation value about 20% better than standard uncoated glass. However, many specialty glass materials such as low-emissivity glass, hear mirror glass, and glass sealed units with a gas-filled space, offer improved insulation and heat transmission values.

What are the skylight lenses made of?

Mac Skylights are available in both Acrylic Plastic and Specialty Glass. With Acrylic, we can provide a skylight with a Dome, Pyramid, or Specialty Shape. In Specialty Glass, the only option that is available is a Flat skylight.

What is the warranty of a skylight?

Mac Skylights offer a two-year warranty from the date of installation by Mac Skylights.

Care and maintenance of my skylight?

Skylights require only a minimum amount of maintenance. Due to their location and elevated shape of most styles, they are self-washing (rain). If cleaning is required for Plastic skylights, a soft cloth with warm water and a mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid, is all that is needed. Glass skylights will use the same cleaning methods as for standard glass windows.
